Telecommunications Interception Bill 2009

I rise this morning to make a contribution to the debate on the Telecommunications Interception Bill 2009. This bill delivers on the Bligh Labor government’s Toward Q2 objectives of delivering safer communities. By allowing telephone-tapping powers to the Queensland Police Service and the Crime and Misconduct Commission, we are giving them the tools they need to fight crime. Importantly, we are ensuring that there is a safeguard through the provision of a role for Queensland’s Public Interest Monitor, the PIM, prior to, and at hearings of, applications for interception warrants. Because these are highly invasive into people’s privacy, this has been an important safeguard. It will operate in the same way as when a general listening device is requested to be put into a potential criminal’s house. » more

Domestic and Family Violence

I rise to inform the House of the good work that two community groups perform in the Pine Rivers electorate: the Pine Rivers Neighbourhood Centre and the Caboolture Regional Domestic Violence Service. I recently attended, with staff and volunteers from the Pine Rivers Neighbourhood Centre, a candle-lighting ceremony in Pine Rivers Park to remember the victims of domestic violence. It was pleasing to see other organisations, such as the Queensland Police Service and Zonta, supporting the event as well as members of the public. » more

Sport and recreation in Bray Park received a welcome boost thanks to a $1.4 million grant announced today under the Queensland Government’s Major Facilities Program.

State Member for Pine Rivers Carolyn Male MP today confirmed that Sport Minister Phil Reeves had approved the funding for the Pine Rivers Memorial Bowls Club to help provide additional opportunities for local residents to participate in sport and recreation.

Carolyn Male said the Major Facilities Program provided financial assistance to organisations to develop and enhance sport and recreation infrastructure to meet community participation needs; support local, regional, state, national and international levels of training and competition; and to attract and host key sporting events. » more
