Carolyn Male MP, State Member for Pine Rivers, said that a 21 year old from Strathpine is helping to run mock archaeological digs, a time traveller program and Medieval Family Fun Week thanks to a $14,000 Skilling Queenslanders for Work traineeship.

Carolyn Male MP said Nikita McMullan is employed as a trainee education officer for the Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology.

“While studying for a Certificate III in Arts Administration, Nikita will also have paid work where she will learn about events management, media and history first-hand,” Carolyn Male MP said.

“This traineeship provides a foundation of theoretical knowledge as well as on-the-job skills which will ensure Nikita is well-equipped for future work in whatever sector she chooses to pursue.”

Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology Sponsorship and Marketing Manager Suesann Vos said she sees success for Nikita who fits in perfectly with their not-for-profit culture.

“Nikita has grown nicely in her responsibilities, she is involved with everything and received exposure to so many different avenues of the workplace since she started in February,” Ms Vos said.

“She has played an integral role in the organisation and has initiated a lot of groundwork for the administration and customer service side of the business.”

Nikita said the traineeship was varied, challenging and provided her with a gentle introduction to work.

“The work environment is great and I have grown in confidence dealing with other people,” Nikita said.

“Since my time here I have been thinking about going into a career in anthropology or working as a curator.”

“It has definitely opened up new doors for me.”

Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
