Carolyn Male MP, State Member for Pine Rivers, has today called on local sport and recreation clubs to nominate volunteers for their tireless efforts.

Carolyn Male MP said the Bligh Government was honouring the outstanding work of Queenslanders at the Valuing Volunteers in Sport and Recreation Award ceremony.

“Volunteers are the lifeblood of the community and nearly all sport and recreation clubs would not be able to survive without them,” Carolyn Male MP said.

“These awards provide us with the opportunity to convey our heartfelt thanks to people who make a difference across my electorate, and I urge everyone to get their nominations in by 10 May.”

Carolyn Male MP said a volunteer’s contribution to the community often goes unrecognised.

“They are the coaches, board members, time keepers, officials and first aid officers,” Carolyn Male MP said.

“They work in our canteens on match days, run fundraisers for grass roots sport and devote hours of their own time to improve sport and recreation opportunities for all Queenslanders.”

“They also have a huge impact on the Queensland economy. In 2006, it was estimated that volunteers contributed $13.4 billion.”

Queensland has the highest rate of volunteers in the country.

“38 per cent of our population participate in volunteer work - with the highest proportion working with sport and recreation organisations,” Carolyn Male MP said.

“Our volunteers go above and beyond to support and develop the clubs they love.”

“Some have applied their knowledge in fields of personal expertise to ensure continued growth, while others have committed years of their lives to raising funds for their organisations.”

“These people are an inspiration to all of us and highlight the great work being achieved behind the scenes.”
