Carolyn Male MP, State Member for Pine Rivers, has called on the local community to act as one against the mistreatment of elderly people.

Carolyn Male MP said the upcoming World Elder Abuse Prevention day on June 15 served as a reminder that elderly people are amongst the most vulnerable.

“Elder abuse is a form of domestic and family violence,” Carolyn Male MP said, “Like domestic violence, it’s often not openly discussed and its impacts can be just as damaging to individuals and families.”

“It’s a sad fact that some people take advantage of the most vulnerable whether it be through neglect, financial abuse or causing physical harm.”

Carolyn Male MP said that it is estimated that in Queensland there are 25,000 abuses of elderly people each year.

“Shame and embarrassment often make it difficult for people to reveal abuse because they don’t want others to know it occurs in their families,” Carolyn Male MP said.

“Sadly, this means the abuse of older people is largely unrecognised and it’s treated as an unspoken problem.”

“We want people to talk about it and deliver the message that elder abuse, like any other form of violence, will not be tolerated.”

“Most importantly, we want people to take action. We all need to act as one against domestic and family violence.”

The Bligh Government is taking action against elder abuse by funding Elder Abuse Prevention Units and seniors legal and support services across Queensland.
