State Member for Pine Rivers, Carolyn Male MP, has used Domestic Violence Prevention Month in May to call on the community to renew its stand against domestic and family violence in Pine Rivers.

Carolyn Male MP said that domestic violence used to be seen as a private matter but it was finally beginning to come out from behind closed doors and discussed in public.

“There is more to be done though and we all must act as one against domestic violence to see real and lasting cultural change,” Carolyn Male MP said.

“The Bligh Government is already undertaking one of the most comprehensive reviews of Queensland’s Domestic and Family Violence Legislation in 20 years.”

“We launched a consultation paper in March to see what people thought about current laws because we want to find out what’s working and what’s not when it comes to holding perpetrators responsible and supporting victims.”

“Now we want the help of the community to help us shape future legislation.”

Carolyn Male MP said the consultation paper would focus on:
- prevention of domestic violence
- protection of victims
- civil and criminal laws
- planning and coordination of domestic violence services
- holding perpetrators responsible for their behaviour

Carolyn Male MP said the community can have their say by downloading copies of the consultation paper from www.getinvolved.qld.gov.au or you can call my office on 3205 6779 to receive a copy before the consultation period closes on May 30.
