Carolyn Male MP, State Member for Pine Rivers, said that nominations are now open for the Queensland Multicultural Awards, which recognise the work and volunteering efforts of Queenslanders in support of multiculturalism.

Carolyn Male MP said it was important to celebrate and recognise those who had played a role in promoting cultural diversity within the community.

“The Queensland Multicultural Awards recognise people and groups whose outstanding efforts have helped to promote multiculturalism,” Carolyn Male MP said.

“They acknowledge the efforts of people who support new migrants and increase community awareness of the value of multiculturalism.”

“Queensland’s cultural diversity is one of the State’s greatest strengths and these awards are just one way of celebrating our multicultural identity and promoting positive community relations.”

Nominations are open across six categories:

- Outstanding volunteer
- Community organisation
- Private enterprise
- Public sector
- Education
- Media

Carolyn Male MP said the Bligh Government was committing to creating a fairer Queensland.

“The Queensland Multicultural Awards are just one way we encourage more people to support their communities and to thank those who already do,” Carolyn Male MP said.

“Since 1990, these awards have recognised community volunteers whose long-term efforts have helped make Queensland a diverse and dynamic place to live, work and raise a family.”

“I encourage Queenslanders to nominate individuals or organisations which have helped to promote and strengthen multiculturalism in Queensland.

Nominations close Friday 20 August, with the award ceremony to be held in late 2010.
