Carolyn Male MP, State Member for Pine Rivers, said that lawn bowl players will be able to play their favourite sport at the Pine Rivers Memorial Bowls Club all year round following the completion of nearly $3 million in upgrades to the facility.

Carolyn Male MP said Bligh Government funding of $1,417,530 has helped the club convert an existing lawn green to synthetic material with shade cover.

“The new green is going to save the club time and money in terms of upkeep,” Carolyn Male MP said.

“The synthetic grass doesn’t require any watering thereby ensuring optimum playing conditions and maintenance costs for synthetic surfaces are minimal in comparison to grass.”

Carolyn Male MP said it’s important to keep local sporting clubs in tip top shape.

“Pine Rivers Bowls Club has more than 12,000 members, is home to three bowling greens and almost 100 staff members and has hosted the Asia Pacific Games, international test matches and other telecast matches,” Carolyn Male MP said.

“While it has always been successful, it’s now a showpiece for the Pine Rivers area and one of the best bowls clubs in Queensland.”

Sport Minister Phil Reeves said funding for the upgrades was made possible through the Bligh Government’s Major Facilities Program.

“The Major Facilities Program provides financial assistance to organisations to develop and enhance sport and recreation infrastructure to meet community participation needs,” Mr Reeves said.

“Lawn bowls is a great sport for people of all ages to get out in the fresh air, meet new friends and get active at the same time.”

“There are currently more than 340 affiliated bowls clubs in Queensland with around 50,000 registered members, proving that bowls is a popular sport that everyone can enjoy, no matter what level of skill or age.”

“As a government, we are very keen to encourage more Queenslanders, of all ages and abilities, to get involved in sport at all levels.”

“The Bligh Government’s commitment to constructing world-class sporting and recreation facilities is a reminder of its Toward Q2: Tomorrow’s Queensland priority to help Queenslanders become Australia’s healthiest people.”
