In Parliament, Carolyn Male MP, State Member for Pine Rivers, asked the Minister for Tourism and Fair Trading, the Hon Peter Lawlor MP, a question regarding the benefits to Pine Rivers residents of the proposed moratorium on liquor licensing applications and the extension of trading hours.

Carolyn Male MP has been informed that, “Residents of Pine Rivers can be assured that no applications for permanent extensions for trading hours after 12 midnight will be considered for the Lawnton Tavern, Warner Tavern, Four Mile Creek Hotel or any other licensed premises in Pine Rivers during the moratorium.”

“The Bligh Government is very aware of community concern in relation to the availability of alcohol in the early hours of the morning, particularly in suburban areas,” Carolyn Male MP said.

“The Minister advised that the 12 month moratorium on applications to extend trading hours between 12 midnight and 5am recently announced by Premier Anna Bligh will provide the all-party Law, Justice and Safety Committee with time to consider the impact of late opening hours on the disturbing increase in incidences of alcohol-related violence.”

“At the end of the moratorium, the Government will consider whether further amendments to Queensland’s liquor licensing legislation are necessary, taking into consideration the recommendations made by the Law, Justice and Safety Committee.”

“The Bligh Government is committed to enhancing patron and community safety on and near licensed premises and to minimising harm from the misuse and abuse of alcohol, particularly where young people are concerned. This moratorium is another step in the Government’s ongoing efforts to promote a safer and more responsible drinking culture in Queensland.”
