Carolyn Male MP, State Member for Pine Rivers, said that two clubs in Brendale will receive $8,528 to repair club facilities under the Sport and Recreation Disaster Assistance Program, following widespread flooding and strong wind damage in south-east Queensland in May 2009.

Carolyn Male said Sports Minister Reeves had confirmed funding, which is being provided under the Sport and Recreation Disaster Assistance Program.

Carolyn Male said funding of $3,828 would help Wantima Country Club Ltd to repair its bunkers. Funding of $4,700 will assist Pine Rivers BMX Club Inc to repair the BMX tracks at its Brendale facility.

“Wantima Country Club Ltd will be able to repair the bunkers and replace the sand affected by flooding,” Carolyn Male said.

Carolyn Male said after the storms battered the south-east, the Queensland Government quarantined funding of up to $1 million to support affected clubs and organisations in south-east Queensland under this program.

“Grants of up to $5,000 are being provided for the replacement of operational items, while grants up to $20,000 will assist with capital works projects to repair sport and recreation infrastructure, damaged as a result of the storms.”

“It is important that the Bligh Government helps get sport and recreation equipment and facilities operating as quickly as possible following natural disasters, so people can get back out playing sport and getting active.”

“Sport is an integral part in the lives of many Queenslanders and continuing to participate in sport and recreation activities is a welcome distraction for those who have suffered so much as a result of natural disasters.”

“The Bligh Government also recognises that access to quality, safe sport and recreation facilities and services is essential if Queenslanders are to lead active, healthy lifestyles,” Carolyn Male said.

Carolyn Male said the Bligh Government will inject more than $78 million in grants for community sport, recreation facilities and initiatives this year- more than any other state or territory in Australia.
